She learned to play the sarpe from them for this film. The original story idea came to her years ago but she never had enough money or resources to do it. In 2013 she went back to India as a tourist with her husband as he was attending graduate school there as an exchange student. They both fell in love with the country and decided to do a film there. First, Tanya helped Patrick get a job on a local newspaper in Gujarat where they met some of the family members of characters from the movie. She also did research on different traditions from India for this film. In 2012 they filmed a short documentary called "As an American" about life in rural India with the sarpe musician and helped raise funds for it on YouTube through their website. After that, they wrote the screenplay of "Jepun" without any funding and began shooting it in 2013. They applied for more grants but couldn't get any of them because both of their names were too common to qualify for them. They didn't use any artificial lighting, only natural daylight to shoot this film. JEPUN was shot in rural India in the state of Gujarat. It is a story of a man who goes blind at birth, but he helps his village by playing music—in this case, playing the sarpe. The main character is an American girl who goes to live with her parents in the village. Her father was stationed there when he served in the U.S. military and she never left since then.
